About Farmers Mutual

With over 120 years of continuous business operation, we are one of the oldest businesses and mutual insurers in Arkansas.

Our Story

Farmers Mutual Insurance Company was incorporated on January 16, 1902 in Gentry, AR as a mutual insurance company serving local farmers and rural residents primarily in Benton County, AR. We were formed as and continue to be a policyholder-owned mutual company. Our focus continues to be on meeting the insurance needs of our policyholders while keeping rates affordable rather than trying to satisfy shareholders.

In our first year in business, we issued 74 policies and collected $148 in premium. Originally, our policies only covered fire, lightning and wind. In 1939, coverage was expanded to include hail. Coverage has continued to expand and today we provide coverage for most risks that homeowners and farm owners desire including liability coverage.

In 1913, claims were so significant that the President made a motion to dissolve the company. There was no second to the motion and a new President was elected.

In 1942, we began purchasing reinsurance to better serve policyholders and manage risks. This partnership has served the Company well and provided financial stability over the years. This strong alliance continues to be valuable during severe weather years by ensuring our ability to pay claims without selling reserve assets.

Throughout the latter half of the 20th century, Farmers Mutual continued serving rural policyholders by expanding its market reach into the River Valley area of Arkansas offering traditional farm and property insurance coverage.

Today, we continue to provide insurance services to homeowners and farmers. We meet the needs of our policyholders with loyalty, integrity, honesty, professionalism and promptness while looking for new ways to expand our reach as a century-plus old mutual company rooted in community-centered insurance service.
